Gary’s Story:
My journey in the optical industry began 40 years ago. I started my career as a Dispensing Optician, and soon after, qualified as a Contact Lens Optician.  These experiences provided a strong foundation as I worked within the ophthalmic departments of hospitals in Hull and Doncaster. Eventually, I ventured into private practice, owning, and operating two optician practices in Hull.

In 2008, I returned to the University of Bradford and qualified as an optometrist in 2010. My passion has always extended far beyond simply examining eyes. I believe in a holistic approach, recognising that our eyes not only shape how we see the world, but also how our body’s posture and condition can affect our vision.

In my role as the resident Low Vision Optometrist at The Partially Sighted Society for the past decade, I’ve had the privilege of working with a diverse range of patients. This includes young people with learning difficulties, older adults with macular degeneration and glaucoma, and those experiencing vision issues after strokes.

For the past two years, I’ve expanded my focus to include patients with mild brain injuries. This has allowed me to explore the neurological connection between brain, vision, and body function.  In this area, I collaborate with other healthcare professionals, such as chiropractors.

Even after 40 years in the field, my passion for my work remains strong, and I constantly strive to learn more.
