Visual Stress test (Overlay exam) for Children

Visual Stress test (Overlay exam) for Children

We are now able to offer Visual Stress tests at the Partially Sighted Society in Doncaster. This is a private exam and not covered by the NHS. If your child has had a recent eye exam please bring that to the Overlay test.
Our philosophy is to initially test using colour overlays and try these for a month. If you find a benefit , but wish to move onto a colourimetry test then this can be arranged.

What is involved in a ‘Colour Overlay test’?
During the test, you will be asked to read a passage of text, these are simple and easy to read words, while looking through different colored overlays. The overlays are typically made of clear plastic or acetate and are available in a variety of colors, including red, green, blue, yellow, and orange etc.

here we introduce coloured overlays over the original text to see how the words change.

As you read the passage of text, we will observe your eyes and ask you about your symptoms. They will be looking to see if the colored overlay helps to reduce any of the symptoms of visual stress, such as:

  • Words or letters appearing to “jump” or move on the page
  • Difficulty focusing on text
  • Headaches or migraines
  • Eye strain
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Difficulty reading in certain lighting conditions

If the colored overlay does help to reduce your symptoms, may recommend that you use a colored overlay when reading. Colored overlays can be purchased and used to see if it helps with your symptoms.

Here are some additional information about color overlay tests for visual stress:

  • The test is typically very quick and easy to perform.
  • The test is not painful or uncomfortable.
  • The test is not a substitute for a full eye exam.
  • There is a charge of £25 for the Colour overlay session. The Overlays are on an A4 and cost £14 if you find them helpful.
