What is the difference between Cataracts and Macular Degeneration (AMD)?

Macular degeneration and cataracts are two different eye conditions that have some shared symptoms, including blurriness and vision loss. The risk for both increases with age.

Macular degeneration (AMD) results from the wear and tear of the part of the retina which is responsible for central vision – known as the macular. A damaged or worn macular causes deposits to collect in the macula which causes central vision loss and increases blurriness.

Cataracts, a cloudy area which develops in the lens of the eye, it can occur in one or both eyes. Cataracts can cause blurriness , light sensitivity (also known as glare). Once the cataracts worsen it is possible to have surgery to remove the cataracts .
